The suburb was named after surgeon William REDFERN who received a land grant in 1817. Sydney's original railway terminus was built to honour William REDFERN and was known as Eveleigh. When Central railway station was built Eveleigh was renamed REDFERN, the name Eveleigh was retained for the railway workshops.
